The inspiration of the song is from the Bible passage where Jesus came walking towards the disciples on the water.

Peter said, “Jesus! If it is you Lord, call me to come to you!” And he did, and Peter got out of the boat and did what was against the laws of nature and against all sound reasoning. He walked on water to Jesus! He let the waves of fear get into his mind… he was close to Jesus and he began to sink… Jesus reached out and lifted him up bringing Peter to himself.
